Trainer Les Ross couldn't believe his luck when Sunshine Coast bookmakers were offering generous odds about Vintage Bon winning on Wednesday.
Backed in to favouritism from $7.50 to $3.20, Vintage Bon stormed home to win the Mooloolaba and Chancellor Park Handicap (1300m).
Ross had every right to be bemused by bookmakers' generosity as Vintage Bon had a second to Looks Like The Cat and a close-up fourth to Aimee as a two-year-old in her form lines.
Looks Like The Cat and Aimee are the joint favourites to be named Queensland Two Year Old of the Year at the state's annual racing awards on Saturday night.
"What price would Looks Like The Cat or Aimee have been in this race - about $1.50?
"She had no luck her last couple of starts and on her form Vintage Bon was always going to be had to beat," Ross said.
Vintage Bon is by former smart sprinter Bon Hoffa and Ross trained her dam Nala, a handy performer on the racetrack.
The filly is raced by a syndicate which includes former Queensland Racing Media Association secretary Daniel Meers who is now working as a political journalist in Canberra.
Winning jockey Brad Stewart said Vintage Bon didn't have the best of luck in the run but had hit the line well.
Meanwhile, impressive galloper The Lynches ($4) will go for a spell despite his all-the-way win in in the Butler McDermott Lawyers Handicap (1300m).
The Lynches, raced by his well-known breeder Rod Lynch, continued the good recent run for trainer Bryan Dais.
"He has done well for his first preparation and he will have a break now," Dais said.
A former Kiwi who strapped the Cox Plate winner Surfers Paradise, Dais produced the smart Soldi Domani to win at Doomben last Saturday.
