In-form apprentice Luke Tarrant almost rode well-backed favourite Hi Son too well before they combined to win at Doomben on Saturday.
Tarrant took an inside run on Hi Son, backed from $2.50 to $1.90, before scoring by a short half-head to Volkhere ($4.60) in the Ray White Sonya Treloar Handicap (2200m).
Trainer Tony Gollan admitted he hoped Tarrant didn't try for a rails run.
"Hi Son doesn't like being inside horses. In fact he isn't very friendly to other horses."
"It was why he probably took longer than he should have to get to the lead inside the 200 metres," Gollan said.
Hi Son scored his first win for Gollan in four starts and the gelding will now have one more run before a spell.
"I am keen to get him back next year where we have him for a full campaign. I think he has the makings of a very good horse," Gollan said.
Meanwhile, former New Zealand apprentice Bridget Grylls is under pressure to remain in Brisbane after her copybook ride to win on Adorabubble in the Uniform Management Services Handicap (1200m).
Grylls begins a six-meeting suspension on Saturday night but her recent efforts ensured she will remain in the minds of Brisbane trainers.
She is on loan to Adorabubble's trainer Barry Lockwood until the end of this month but he is keen for her to stay on.
Adorabubble has missed picking up a cheque just once in her career and now won five races.
