Fresh from one of the highlights of his career, jockey Ryan Maloney will be chasing an even bigger prize at Flemington in the Makybe Diva Stakes.
Maloney partnered Angelic Light to an upset win over star sprinter Lankan Rupee in Saturday's Group Two McEwen Stakes.
This Saturday he gets back aboard Sertorius in the Makybe Diva Stakes as both horse and rider chase a first Group One win.
With Craig Williams replacing the suspended Maloney, Sertorius resumed with a solid sixth in the Group One Memsie Stakes (1400m) won by Dissident.
Maloney was at Caulfield as a spectator and was pleased with the way Sertorius found the line from back in the field under the weight-for-age conditions.
"It was a bit hard to swallow missing the ride but the main thing is I'm back on," Maloney said.
"I thought he ran enormous first-up.
"I went and saw him after the race and it was like he had not been around, so it definitely tells me he's on song.
"By all reports he's improved a lot and goes into this race really well."
The race attracted 13 nominations on Monday including Dissident, the Lloyd Williams-owned pair of Fawkner and Green Moon, last year's winner Foreteller and runner-up Puissance De Lune, and Boban who is a triple Group One winner over 1600m.
While Sertorius is expected to be better suited as he gets over further, Maloney is not discounting his chances.
"He's definitely in the mix. I couldn't see why not," he said.
"I've had a couple of seconds in Group Ones so it would be nice to break the duck."
Sertorius has played a big part in Maloney's career with the jockey partnering the Jamie Edwards and Bruce Elkington-trained gelding in 20 of his past 21 starts, including wins in last spring's Bendigo Cup and Group Two Zipping Classic.
His autumn campaign included a first-up second in the Group One Futurity Stakes and a third in the Sydney Cup.
Maloney said Saturday's McEwen Stakes, his second Group Two win, ranked with the best moments of his career.
"The Zipping Classic is probably a bit more prestigious race, but it was definitely as big a thrill as I got out of the Zipping, that's for sure," he said.
