Super Cool building for profitable spring

Thursday 11 September 2014, 5:03pm

Mark Kavanagh doesn't expect Super Cool to be at his peak in the Makybe Diva Stakes.

But he is keen on the Group One winner making an impact at some stage of the spring.

Super Cool has not won since his Australian Cup triumph as a three-year-old in March last year but Kavanagh gave the talented galloper this year's autumn off to target the spring.

The five-year-old beat one runner home in the Memsie Stakes first-up but broke 11secs for his sectional from the 400m to the 200m and Kavanagh believes he will keep improving and hit form in the coming weeks.

"First-up was another situation where it wasn't really built for him to run on," Kavanagh said.

"His sectionals were pretty good. I wouldn't lose faith in Super Cool yet.

"I think he will probably need Saturday's run but then you will see him start to stick his head out."

Super Cool is one of the outsiders for the Makybe Diva.

Last year's spring campaign for Super Cool included Group One placings in the Memsie Stakes and Caulfield Stakes and a fifth in the Cox Plate.

He finished ninth in the Melbourne Cup but is not nominated for the two-mile event this year.

Kavanagh said the Group One Cox Plate (2040m) and the Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) were his two targets.
