Apprentice Luke Tarrant has an early-season lead in the Brisbane premiership and a genuine chance to maintain his advantage with two key rides for trainer Kelly Schweida at Doomben.
Like many Brisbane trainers, Schweida is unhappy with the weight scale which forces them to use the claims of the junior riders with Tarrant to ride Epic and Shadowside on Saturday.
Fellow apprentices Matt McGuren and Bridget Grylls fill the second and third positions on the premiership ladder.
Apprentices will ride six of the topweights at Doomben on Saturday with Epic to carry 57kg after Tarrant's 2kg claim and Shadowside 56kg.
"Epic has shot straight back up in the weights after winning at Doomben two weeks ago," Schweida said.
"The handicappers get the open company horses up too quickly in the weights."
Schweida may be forced to travel outside Queensland if Epic wins the BRC.com.au (1650m).
"I haven't made up my mind about whether Epic will go south," Schweida said.
"On one hand I don't think so and then I look at the weight he will get if he wins on Saturday."
Among Epic's opposition will be the Joe Pride-trained Gangster's Choice who has been sent to Brisbane to avoid wet tracks in Sydney.
Gangster's Choice is accompanied by Diamond Oasis who runs in the Class 6 sprint (1050m) with Glen Colless to ride both stablemates.
Shadowside runs in the three-year-old handicap (1350m) and will carry 56kg after labouring under 59kg last time out when sixth behind Soldi Domani who had 3kg less.
"I think Shadowside will be better at 1600 metres or further but he certainly gets in well here at the weights," Schweida said.
Schweida's top filly Miss Cover Girl is back in work after winning four of her five starts as a juvenile.
The trainer has yet to decide whether Miss Cover Girl will head to Melbourne while stakes-winning sprinter Better Than Ready is likely to be aimed at the summer sprints in Brisbane.
