If not for an oversupply of broodmares, Villa Splendido would have been retired.
Instead the mare made the most of her reprieve to post her second career win in Saturday's The Paslode Handicap (1500m) at Rosehill.
Victorious on debut at Hawkesbury more than two years ago, Villa Splendido had struggled to add to that tally although she had been twice stakes placed.
Trainer Garry White and owner Grahame Mapp considered her future and decided they were better off trying to win another race, rather than add to the 60-strong band of broodmares at Mapp's Hobartville Stud.
"We don't want another broodmare so we'll race her on," White said.
"We just wanted her to win another race and that might even change her attitude.
"Nothing is wrong with her and she's still got the desire to race."
Tye Angland gave Villa Splendido ($8.50) every opportunity, settling her midfield and getting off the fence to challenge the leaders in the straight.
She held on gamely to score by a head over Wings ($9.50) with $3.60 favourite Sensualism another 1-1/4 lengths away third.
