Injury rules stayer St Jean out of spring

The Naturalism Stakes has attracted 20 nominations but import St Jean is not among them after suffering a campaign-ending injury.

Trainer Aaron Purcell has told stewards St Jean has a strained tendon and will not compete in the spring carnival.

St Jean had been expected to have his next start at Caulfield in Saturday's Group Three Naturalism (2000m) with the winner gaining ballot exemption for the Caulfield Cup.

The lightly raced five-year-old by Teofilo won two city races over 2000m and 2400m in May before having a spell to prepare for a shot at the spring.

He scored a strong win second-up over 1600m at Moonee Valley on September 6.
