Schmidt lands win at only Ipswich ride

Wednesday 17 September 2014, 3:12pm

Apprentice Cassie Schmidt again showed her liking for Ipswich racetrack when she won at her only ride there on Wednesday.

Schmidt took out the Ipswich apprentices' title last season and from just five rides at the circuit this term she has notched three victories.

Many of her 175 career-wins have come in the NSW northern rivers region and at the Gold Coast but this season she is concentrating on Brisbane metropolitan racing.

Schmidt took $2.30 favourite Madame Bookworm to the front and she was never headed, winning the Battle Of Bita Paka Handicap (1100m) by 4-3/4 lengths.

The mare's win also continued the good recent form of trainer Lindsay Gough.

"Cassie always rides well for me. Her having a three kilogram metropolitan claim is a very big advantage and especially when these Ipswich meetings are metropolitan standard," Gough said.

Meanwhile, first starter Zietta revived memories of former Queensland premiership-winning sire Lion Hunter when she led all the way to take out the Able Seaman Billy Williams Handicap (1100m).

Zietta races in the colours of Almavale Stud's Ken Turner who also raced and stood Lion Hunter.
