Sweynesse takes out the G3 Spring Stakes

Wednesday 17 September 2014, 5:07pm

Godolphin colt Sweynesse underlined his potential in a race that invariably unearths a future Group One star with a facile win in the Spring Stakes at Newcastle on Wednesday.

Making it three wins from as many starts, Sweynesse came from the back of the field off a muddling tempo to win a Group Three race that has launched the careers of many Group One winners.

In giving Godolphin its first stakes success since setting up a permanent stable in Australia, Sweynesse has also earned the right to follow in the hoofsteps of headline horses like Coronation Day, Shogun Lodge, Universal Prince and Clangalang who achieved elite-level wins after their Newcastle victories.

And jockey Kerrin McEvoy said trainer John O'Shea's spring ambitions for Sweynesse would not be misplaced.

"He's got scope for further improvement and that means we are starting to get very excited, for sure," McEvoy said.

"I rode him with some degree of confidence because he's got that turn of foot to put himself in the race.

"It's the right time of year for a colt like him to be in work."

Sweynesse, who was also O'Shea's first winner for Sheikh Mohammed when he scored on debut at Kembla Grange in May, will be sent towards the Spring Champion Stakes at Randwick on October 11.

"He's typical of the Lonhros in that every time you raise the bar with him he jumps it," Godolphin racing manager Jason Walsh said.

"Two thousand metres might be the limit for the Lonhro progeny but his mother is a stoutly bred staying mare.

"There's a lot of staying blood in his pedigree."
