McGuren takes riding honours at Ipswich

Wednesday 17 September 2014, 5:47pm

Second-chance apprentice Matthew McGuren continued to make the most of his opportunities with a winning double at Ipswich on Wednesday.

McGuren is second on the Brisbane jockeys' premiership with his double giving him 11 wins for the season, behind only fellow apprentice Luke Tarrant.

He is also prominent in the state-wide jockeys' competition with 18 winners at all Queensland tracks.

But statistics only tell part of McGuren's story.

He has battled weight problems throughout his riding career and has come close to hanging up his saddle several times.

He rode in Brisbane last year with plenty of success before weight issues forced him back to the NSW northern rivers circuit.

However, the arrival of his baby daughter Makella has McGuren determined to make the most of his riding career for as long as he can.

It has also prompted him to seek a second chance in Brisbane in the hope of securing his family's future.

"I moved up to be with (trainer) Bruce Hill in July and just want to make the most of my opportunities before my apprenticeship runs out in December," he said.

His wins at Ipswich on Wednesday came aboard the Hill-trained Falzini and Storm Pelotari for Donald Baker.

Storm Pelotari is likely to be given his chance in a better-class Brisbane race after making it three wins from his past four starts at Ipswich.

The gelding did his early racing in NSW but has been with the Toowoomba-based Baker since July and has earned a prize money cheque at all six starts since.

Meanwhile, Gillian Heinrich belatedly celebrated her achievement in becoming the first woman in the 150-year history of the Ipswich Turf Club to win the trainers' premiership.

Heinrich, who was overseas when the club presented last season's other premiership winners with their awards last month, saddled up Wednesday's winner Military Manor.

On a day when claiming apprentices again dominated, top jockey Michael Cahill was seen at his best on northern rivers mare Righteous Miss to win the Cardboard Products and Services Handicap.

Cahill said Righteous Miss had appreciated a drop in class from a Saturday fillies and mares race at her previous start.
