Former Sydney horse Busselton has broken his maiden at Ipswich for new trainer Barry Lockwood.
A $300,000 yearling, Busselton is by the champion sire Redoute's Choice and was originally bought as a possible stallion prospect.
However, in his three starts for Gai Waterhouse, Busselton managed second placings at Wyong and Newcastle and a fourth at Newcastle.
Busselton was sent to Lockwood in Brisbane and caught the eye when second in a barrier trial at Eagle Farm on August 21.
Lockwood has a long association with Arrowfield Stud, which stands Redoute's Choice and retains an interest in Busselton.
"Busselton can be a piggy little bloke and can have a mind of his own. But he has plenty of ability and I think he can go through to Saturday class up here," Lockwood said.
Busselton was having his first start since October last year and Lockwood expects him to be further improved by the run.
Jim Byrne was well back on Busselton ($3.10) coming to the home turn but charged down the outside to win Wednesday's Ipswich RSL Service Club Hcp (1350m).
Byrne rode Busselton in a recent jump out and wasn't convinced he should be ridden for pace.
"I did the videos of his races this morning and I notice he had been ridden on the pace except for his first start when he missed the jump and ran home strongly at Wyong," Byrne said.
"We had an ordinary draw today so I thought we might try him from back in the field."
