MOIR STAKES AT MOONEE VALLEY - WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

HISTORY: First run in 1976 over 1000 metres when it was won by Scamanda. Elevated to Group Two statues in 1979 and to Group One from 2013. From 2007 increased to 1200 metres.

NOTABLE WINNERS: The honour roll lists some of Australia' greatest sprinters including Manikato (1982), Placid Ark (1987), Schillaci (1992), Falvelon (2000), Miss Andretti (2007), Apache Cat (2009) and Black Caviar (2010 and 2011).

TALKING POINTS: Only five horses have accepted for this year's Moir which is the chance for the world's leading sprinter Lankan Rupee to avenge his first defeat of the year when he was beaten by Angelic Light in the McEwen Stakes.

Buffering, the 2012 winner, finished second to Lankan Rupee's now retired stablemate Samaready last year.

RACE PATTERN: Buffering's trainer Robert Heathcote has stated it is the intention for his horse to lead. This means the others will have to catch him and if Buffering is going as well as Heathcote believes, then probably Lankan Rupee is the only one who can.
