True Passion shows Wolfgram's skills

Wednesday 24 September 2014, 5:27pm

Apprentice Travis Wolfgram's decision to put in some hard work after a recent freshen-up paid dividends with victory on True Passion on Wednesday.

The Liam Birchley trained True Passion ($5) led all the way to beat the favourite Ryan's Rogue ($1.50) by 1-1/4 lengths in the K M Smith 3YO (1100m) at Ipswich.

Wolfgram, last season's Gold Coast jockey's premiership winner, recently had a short break to get his weight in order and has been riding plenty of work to attain full fitness.

"I am now apprenticed to Matt Dunn at Murwillumbah but he has been good enough to let me ride work for some other leading trainers such as Mr Birchley," Wolfgram said."

"I won on True Passion at Kilcoy at his first start and he has improved since. I think he can improve a bit further as well."

True Passion ran very slick 1:3.21 which broke the class record and also came within 0.4 sec of the 32-year-old course record held by top sprinter of the 1980s, Todonic.

Another apprentice Lani Fancourt celebrated her recent move from Toowoomba to Brisbane with an all-the-way win on the Tony Gollan trained Satirical Lass ($2.90) in the Sub Branch Hcp (1100m).

Gollan rewarded Fancourt for her efforts at trackwork with the ride on Satirical Lass, who was placed in top three-year-old company last season.

Tough galloper In The Genes ($3.60) continued jockey Tim Bell's good run with trainer Rex Lipp when he won the RSL Sub Branch Hcp (1700m).

Bell and Lipp combined to win the Queensland Oaks with Tinto who has been back in work for the past month with the Magic Millions races in January and Sydney autumn in mind.

"In the Genes is pretty tough as he had 14 starts last campaign and that was his eighth this time in," Lipp said.
