Racing loses another top sire in Sequalo

Thursday 25 September 2014, 11:29am

In a blow for the Queensland breeding industry, champion sire Sequalo has been euthanased on humane grounds.

His death comes just two weeks after he was crowned Queensland's Sire of the Year at an awards night in Brisbane.

Sequalo, aged 24, had stood at Lyndhurst Stud near Warwick on the Darling Downs for 18 years.

A spokesperson for Lyndhurst Stud confirmed Sequalo had been euthanased on Wednesday after a week-long battle with laminitis.

His death comes a week after Darley Stud stallion Street Cry was euthanased after failing to recover from a rare neurological condition.

Sequalo was twice Queensland's leading sire in 2002-03 and last season.

He had one of his greatest moments when his son Spirit Of Boom won the Group One Doomben 10,000 in May.

Spirit Of Boom will continue Sequalo's legacy standing his first season at stud this spring.

All up Sequalo sired 645 individual winners of more than 2200 races.

Along with Spirit Of Boom, his best offspring included Burdekin Blues, Missy Longstocking, Bold Glance, Star Shiraz, and Seeking More.

Trained by Charlie Waymouth, Sequalo was a tough sprinter who won 10 of his 40 starts and more than $830,000 prize money.
