Kenjorwood has gone close to breaking the 1700m record at Caulfield after a bold front-running ride from apprentice Regan Bayliss.
The Peter Moody-trained Kenjorwood, who firmed from $4.80 to $3.80 favourite, ran his rivals into the ground in Sunday's Caulfield RSL Welfare Fund Plate to win by four lengths in a time of 1:41.51 on the good track.
His time was just outside the record 1:41.42 set by Niagara Falls a decade ago.
Five-year-old Kenjorwood took up the running from his inside gate in his first start since he won over 2000m at Flemington on August 9.
By mid-race First Course and Commanding Time were in touch with the leader but the rest of the field was well strung out.
Kenjorwood kicked approaching the home turn and took a commanding lead, going to the line well clear of Commanding Time with Extra Zero half a length away third.
Bayliss said he wasn't really aware the field was strung out but said Kenjorwood travelled sweetly.
"I wasn't worried about the other horses," Bayliss said.
"I was just happy getting him into his comfort zone. Because he's such a big striding horse, the last thing you want to do is hold him up.
"So I just let him get into a nice rhythm and he travelled sweetly and it was a good win."
Moody said the Listed $200,000 Cranbourne Cup (2050m) on October 12 could be an option for Kenjorwood's next start.
