Bar Stories starts Magic Millions build-up

Friday 3 October 2014, 5:32pm

Progressive filly Bar Stories is up and running and ready to make her mark in Sydney's first two-year-old race.

Trainer Gary Portelli has been impressed with the daughter of Real Saga who stands at Queensland's Glenlogan Park Stud and is the sire of Real Surreal, the winner of the 2013 Magic Millions, a race on Bar Stories' program.

First she has to get through her debut in Saturday's Gimcrack Stakes (1000m) at Randwick as well as Portelli hopes.

"We bought her for $41,000 in Queensland and the Magic Millions is a race we have in mind," Portelli said.

"She's drawn wide so she will have to do a bit of work and it is a learning process.

"But she is a big, strong filly who does everything right.

"It's like she's been here before."

Bar Stories' owners include friends of Portelli's from when he was starting out as a trainer in Orange two decades ago.

"Mark Johnston is among the owners and is someone I've known a long time and we've had a bit of luck together so hopefully it continues," Portelli said.

Bar Stories will be ridden by premier Sydney jockey James McDonald from the outside barrier in the field of eight.

In the colts and geldings' division of the juveniles, McDonald will ride Sooboog for the Hawkes training team.

Sooboog is a brother to the now-retired Group-One winning sprinter Snitzerland.
