Champagne Ruby will take another step in her quest to add distance racing to her repertoire at Sandown on Wednesday.

The mare has demonstrated steady form, placing three times from four starts during her current program.

And Cranbourne trainer Greg Eurell expects the pattern to remain unchanged after her run in the D'Urban Handicap (1600m).

"I think it's a really nice race for her," Eurell said. "She's run at Sandown before and run well and she'll be very competitive.

"She's one of those improving mares and in the future I think there will be a nice race for her because she's so honest and so consistent.

"I do think she'll step out to 2000 metres at some stage too so if she can do that it just opens the opportunities up a little bit more."

Champagne Ruby was third at Moonee Valley at her last start but was primed to do better, according to Eurell.

"She came through it well but she probably just didn't get the right gap in the field to get a run.

"Had she got that it would have made it interesting but she has come out of the Valley well."

One of the benefits the four-year-old has enjoyed has been a well-spaced preparation.

"She's had the good fortune that her races haven't been too crammed up. We've had a good gap between runs which I think enables her to get through them quite comfortably," Eurell said.

Eurell also has three-year-old filly Zombie Dancer in action in the Schweppes Handicap (1600m) and feels she will acquit herself well.

"I think all her runs have been quite creditable really," Eurell said.

"I thought she did a terrific job at Cranbourne last start, she had to overcome a few difficulties there but she hit the line solid.

"It's indicative that the step up to the 1600 (metres) will be suitable and Sandown is probably a great track for her to get the opportunity to see what she can do."
