Bondeiger a chance for Derby call-up

Wednesday 15 October 2014, 4:23pm

The Victoria Derby is now a target for the Danny O'Brien-trained Bondeiger following his tenacious win at Caulfield.

O'Brien said the three-year-old was likely to have his next start in the Moonee Valley Vase over 2040m on Cox Plate day after his hard-fought win in the 1600m Champagne Pommery for three-year-olds on Wednesday.

Ridden by James Winks, Bondeiger ($3.40 fav) scored by a nose from Royal Standing ($21) with Kapset ($6.50) three-quarters of a length away third.

Bondeiger recorded back-to-back victories with his win on Wednesday having broken his maiden status at Geelong on September 26.

O'Brien said Bondeiger had been given a solid enough preparation to run in the Derby over 2500m on November 1 if owner Lawrence Eales gave him the green light.

"He's a really nice horse," O'Brien said.

"He's got the potential to step out over 2000 (metres) and further and I'll have a talk to Lawrence and we might run him in the Vase on Saturday week.

"If you run well in that it would be hard to resist the next week.

"He's had a good enough prep for it (Derby). He'll be fit enough."

Eales' biggest win in racing so far has been the 2009 Melbourne Cup with Shocking.

"He (Lawrence) has found some really good ones over the years and we're hoping that this guy is half as good as some of the other ones," O'Brien said.

Winks said the victory was full of merit as he had to dig deep in the straight after a bumping duel turning for home.

"He's not a big horse and there was a bit of argy bargy on the home turn," Winks said.

"Once he levelled out he won well."
