Gordon Lord Byron ready for Ascot

Thursday 16 October 2014, 7:32am

Gordon Lord Byron looks set to take his chance in the Champions Sprint at Ascot with trainer Tom Hogan pleasantly surprised with the condition of the track.

The globetrotting Gordon Lord Byron has won Group One races in several different countries including Australia where he took out the George Ryder Stakes earlier this year.

He has run some tremendous races in defeat in Britain and Ireland recently and was runner-up in the Sprint Cup at Haydock and the Prix de la Foret at Longchamp.

Earlier this week, Hogan expressed doubts about letting his stable star head to Berkshire in ultra-testing conditions on Saturday, but is happier now he has checked the course himself.

"I walked the track and I found the ground to be fresh and soft. I was pleasantly surprised and we'll be running as long as it doesn't deteriorate," Hogan said.

"There are a few heavy patches elsewhere on the course, but they don't concern the sprint track.

"Gordon is in great form and ready for action.

"It's a good pot and if he can come home with a bit of it we'll be delighted."
