Fringe Melb Cup horses under microscope

Friday 17 October 2014, 4:02pm

Melbourne Cup entry Brigantin will need to win convincingly at Randwick for trainer Chris Waller to change course towards Australia's greatest race.

Brigantin will be one of four horses trying to improve their position in the Melbourne Cup order of entry when they run in the $100,000 City Tattersall's Club Cup on Saturday.

"He would have to win impressively to think about the Melbourne Cup," Waller said.

"Having said that his last two runs have been exceptional. He's racing well.

"There's a case to say he should have run in the top three in the Metropolitan and he ran second in the Newcastle (Gold) Cup before that."

Brigantin is 41st in the latest order of entry, five places behind La Amistad and one in front of Celtic Prince who will also run at Randwick.

Restricted-grade stayer Khalid is unqualified in equal 65th and would need to win the Tatt's Cup to book a start in the Lexus Stakes, a race that provides the winner with a free ticket into the Melbourne Cup.

The Tattersall's Cup used to be a belated lead-in to the Melbourne spring for Sydney stayers.

But it lost its relevance until the 2010 edition when Maluckyucky ran away with the race at his first try at 2400m before winning the Lexus at his start and beating all but Americain in the Melbourne Cup three days later.

Waller also has Danchai and Mulaqen in the Tatt's Cup but it is the Gai Waterhouse-trained Order Of The Sun, last week's all-the-way winner in record time over 2000m, who has early favouritism.
