A bold gamble to use an apprentice on Darci Be Good helped the gelding score his first win in nearly two years at Doomben on Saturday.

Darci Be Good, who was second in the 2011 Spring Champion Stakes behind Doctor Doom, had not won since the 2012 Hawkesbury Gold Cup.

The gelding was sold to clients of Caloundra trainer Andrew Williamson for $30,000 and has been consistent in Queensland without winning before Saturday.

Darci Be Good has had the misfortune to run into in-form Queensland stayers Volkhere and Hi Son who have won five Brisbane open company races between this season.

He had been third in two of those races and fourth in another.

For much of the straight in Saturday's Easy As Pool Cleaning Handicap (2040m) it looked as though it would be another Volkhere and Hi Son show but eventually Darci Be Good ($9) wore them down.

He went on to beat Volkhere ($4.60) by a neck with a head to Hi Son ($3.80) in third place.

Trainer Andrew Williamson admitted it had been a gamble to use apprentice Travis Wolfgram to get some weight relief for Darci Be Good.

"Senior jockey Damian Browne has done a great job helping with this horse. I wasn't sure Darci Be Good would be an apprentice's horse but it was time to gamble and get some weight off him," Williamson said.

"The other pair have been using apprentices allowances and we got in well against them today."

Williamson said Darci Be Good came to him in great fettle from trainer Bede Murray.

Trainer Rob Heathcote said Volkhere would have one more start this campaign but Hi Son is headed for the spelling paddock.

Meanwhile, former New Zealand galloper Abaddon confirmed his rating as a future star when he came from well back on the turn to win the Cargo Transport Handicap.

Abaddon had been under sale for Hong Kong but failed a veterinarian's scope.
