Prince Of Penzance showed his best form to win the Moonee Valley Cup, but the victory still leaves him short of a berth in the Melbourne Cup.
The Darren Weir-trained five-year-old came from back in the field in Saturday's Group Two race over 2500m before going on to defeat Le Roi by 1-1/4 lengths with French stayer Au Revoir half a length away after leading.
The race was marred by a fall approaching the home turn with Chad Schofield, the rider of Albonetti, hitting the deck.
Schofield was able to walk away from the incident and was cleared by doctors to continue riding.
Prince Of Penzance passed the first ballot clause for the Melbourne Cup but he is still well down the order of entry.
Racing Victoria's chief handicapper will announce any penalty on Monday.
"But even if he gets two kilograms it would only take him from No.59 to 37 (in the ballot)," Carpenter said.
Prince Of Penzance's jockey Michelle Payne said she had always had faith in the horse's ability.
"When he got the run today, it was tight coming around the corner, he just burst through there and he was flying to the line," Payne said.
The intention had been to be further forward but Payne said Prince Of Penzance didn't begin well enough and she reverted to plan B and settled back.
Connections would consider the Cup should the attrition rate be such that Prince Of Penzance happened to somehow make the field.
But the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, a race Weir won with Puissance De Lune two years ago, is the likely next target.
Au Revoir's prize money moved him one place higher in the Cup ballot to 27.
OTI Racing's Simon O'Donnell was happy with Au Revoir's run and said the Melbourne Cup was the plan.
"There's another pay up for the Melbourne Cup on Monday so we'll sit down after that and see exactly where he sits," O'Donnell said.
