40 horses left in the Melbourne Cup

Monday 27 October 2014, 11:50am

There are 40 horses including 12 international hopefuls left in the Melbourne Cup after the latest payment stage.

The second declarations taken on Monday include Moonee Valley Cup winner Prince of Penzance who has been penalised two kilograms for his Group Two win on Saturday.

The Lexus Stakes at Flemington on Saturday is the last chance for a horse to force its way into the field of 24 with the winner gaining a start as long as it is among the 40 declared entries.

La Amistad, a three-quarter sister to three-time Cup winner Makybe Diva, is expected to take her place in the Lexus Stakes (2500m) in the hope of gaining a start in Cup on Tuesday week.
