Trainer Andrew Williamson hopes a lack of better-class staying races in Brisbane could prove a blessing in disguise for Darci Be Good.
Darci Be Good will drop back 200m when he tackles the Garrards Horse and Hound Handicap (1600m) at Doomben on Saturday.
Williamson has done a wonderful job with Darci Be Good since his clients bought the gelding from the Bede Murray stable at Kembla Grange in June.
The gelding has had six starts for Williamson, recording a win, four thirds and a fourth.
"Every run he has put in for us and he has just been a bit stiff to run into some in-form horses," Williamson said.
At his last start, Darci Be Good finally broke the stranglehold of Volkhere and Hi Son on Queensland open-company staying races when he won at Doomben three weeks ago.
Williamson had planned to run Darci Be Good over 2200m at Doomben last week but the race was scrapped when there were insufficient acceptors.
"The three weeks between starts means we have been able to give him a bit of a freshen up," Williamson said.
"He has won three times at 1600m and in black-type company earlier in his career."
"And thanks to Brave Ali being an acceptor he gets in with the same weight he won with last time after we claim two kilos with Travis Wolfgram."
Williamson said he still had a Christmas trip to Sydney with Darci Be Good in the back of his mind.
"He has stood up pretty well but really the rock-hard tracks at the moment are not to his liking," he said.
Only seven horses accepted for the race and Brave Ali and Amexed have been scratched.
Brisbane usually struggles for open-company horses in the early season but the situation has been increased with a record number of Queensland horses campaigning in Melbourne this spring.
