Murray Bridge galloper Lord Aspen has kept an unblemished record with a fighting win at Flemington.
After winning his first three starts in Adelaide, Lord Aspen graduated to Listed level with victory over 1400m on Saturday.
Ridden by South Australian jockey Matthew Neilson, Lord Aspen, backed from $3.80 to $3.30 favourite, scored a long-head win over Orient Line ($31) with Ducal Castle ($26) a length away third.
Providing Lord Aspen pulls up well he will back up into the Sandown Guineas (1600m) next Saturday.
Victory in that race would emulate the feat of fellow Murray Bridge-trained galloper Pay Keys who won the Sandown Guineas in 2003.
Trainer Mick Huxtable said Lord Aspen was still learning what racing is about.
"He's a big kid but he can gallop," Huxtable said.
Following the Sandown Guineas, Huxtable said the three-year-old would head for a break before a light autumn campaign.
"It'll be light. Just couple of runs and then get set for the spring," he said.
Neilson had never tasted success at Flemington during Cup week and was ecstatic with the victory.
"He was a little fired up behind the barriers," Neilson said.
"I think being away from home and the big crowd fired him up a bit but I reckon that will just take the edge of him for next week."
