The most obvious race that fits into the summer schedule of Scream Machine is not the straightforward target it might seem.
Scream Machine, who continues his latest campaign at Rosehill, appeals as an ideal horse for the Villiers Stakes.
It's a Group Two race run over the famous Randwick mile and despite a midfield finish in last year's edition, Scream Machine has since built a profile that is strong enough to claim some traction as a genuine chance in next month's race.
But trainer Jason Coyle isn't entirely sold on the plan and Scream Machine must convince him in a crossroads race - the Cellarbrations Kingswood Handicap (1350m) - on Saturday.
Scream Machine didn't have the sharpness to match Hawkes Racing's speedster Our Boy Malachi when he resumed at Rosehill and an extra 250m will give Coyle a better guide on the wellbeing of one of his stable stars.
"We've been pretty easy on him between that (first-up) run and this run," Coyle said.
"But we'll learn a lot from this Saturday as to whether we race on to Villiers.
"He's got to be running well. He doesn't necessarily have to run top three or four but if he's running through the line that means next start Festival Stakes into the Villiers."
A below-par run to Coyle's eye is almost certain to find Scream Machine renewing acquaintances with the spelling paddock.
It would be a move to help replicate one of the best runs of his career when he was beaten less than two lengths in the Doomben 10,000.
"He ran a cracker up in Queensland and if he goes for a break now he still comes up for the winter," Coyle said.
Scream Machine is an $11 chance to win second-up for the first in his career in a race where the in-form You'll Never has almost halved his quote into favouritism.
You'll Never came from last in a Rosehill win two weeks ago and, along with Lucy's Look in the Cellarbrations Blacktown Handicap, is among the best from trainer Chris Waller's all-conquering stable.
