BRISBANE Nov 16 AAP - Veteran jockey Michael Cahill has put his younger rivals on notice he intends to be a force in the Brisbane premiership with a double at the Gold Coast on Saturday.
Cahill, 48, won the 2012-13 premiership and had what appeared to be an unbeatable lead last season.
But young gun Tim Bell made inroads in the final few weeks and cemented the title on the final day of the season.
Cahill has had a slow start to this season but has been making his mark in recent weeks.
He has ridden seven winners, including six in metropolitan races, to be on 13 in the Brisbane title race still 11 behind leader Luke Tarrant.
Cahill said he had been working hard on his fitness and weight.
"I had a bad winter carnival and it was really my own fault. I made a few bad decisions about which horses to ride and it carried over," Cahill said.
"But I have been working hard and I should be riding a couple of very nice younger horses in coming weeks.
"I have also been getting rides for a few of the bigger stables again so I hope to be back in the premiership race soon."
Cahill won on Abu Ben Adam and Ongoing Venture at the Gold Coast.
Abu Ben Adam is the most expensive horse veteran trainer Pat Duff has ever bought at $130,000.
"I had never paid more than $100,000 for a horse but after seeing him in the sales ring I had to have him," Duff said.
"I trained his mother Gunalda who was very smart."
"He has won $160,000 in prize money now and I think he will eventually be up to stakes class."
