Overseas stayers simply better: O'Donnell

Sunday 16 November 2014, 5:49pm

While many lament the lack of home grown stayers in Australia, Simon O'Donnell makes no apologies for buying northern hemisphere horses to race here.

O'Donnell and his partner Terry Henderson run OTI Racing which sources distance horses from Europe including Saturday's Sandown stakes winners Renew and Au Revoir.

Both will remain in Australia with Zipping Classic winner Au Revoir to be transferred from champion French trainer Andre Fabre to Peter Moody.

Sandown Cup winner Renew was scheduled to go to Chris Waller but could now remain at Ballarat with fledgling trainer Archie Alexander who has had him for three starts following his move from Marco Botti.

Overseas-trained horses won the three biggest races of the spring with Admire Rakti taking the Caulfield Cup, Adelaide the Cox Plate and Protectionist the Melbourne Cup.

"The product's got to be there, If it's there it will be supported," O'Donnell told Sky Racing.

"You don't need a lot more evidence to say the overseas stayers are better than the southern hemisphere stayers.

"It's a debate we have every year.

"While the product has to be sourced somewhere else that's where we'll go."

Japanese horse Admire Rakti collapsed and died after the Melbourne Cup but Coolmore's Adelaide will race in Australia for Chris Waller and Protectionist has been transferred from Andreas Wohler to Kris Lees.

O'Donnell said he and Henderson would discuss the future of Renew, winner of the Sandown Cup (3200m), with the ownership group early this week.

"At the end of the day it will be what's best for the horse and the owners," he said.

"Chris Waller is one of the best trainers in the country. Archie is still learning his trade.

"The discussion will take place but it hasn't yet."

Englishman Alexander has set up at Ballarat, a country environment O'Donnell says has its advantages.

The most successful horse OTI has imported to Australia is Manighar, winner of three Group One races in the care of Moody.

OTI also came within a nose of winning the Melbourne Cup in 2008 when the Luca Cumani-trained Bauer just failed to catch Viewed who gave Bart Cummings his 12th win.
