I was very impressed by some of the yearlings I inspected last year by Harry Angel (Ire) but they were out of my reach. At the Gold Coast Magic Millions there were only two in the sale with them averaging $235,000.
Harry Angel has done a great job here currently sitting in 2nd position on the Australian First Season Sire’s List for earnings and equal first for winners.
He did an exceptional job with his first crop in Europe producing 23 individual 2yo winners of 37 races. This placed him in 4th position on the European First Season Sire’s List.
I spoke to Bill Mitchell about this colt prior to the sale. He has a great pedigree coming from one of the best families in the Australian Stud Book and was very cleverly mated with his dam being a full sister to the stakes placed Medaglia d’Oro filly Geist who was a very handy filly winning three races but importantly being very competitive against some very good fillies.
The colt is out of Shadow who is out of the un-raced Exceed and Excel mare Wraith who had just the two foals including Geist who was raced by Godolphin.
Shadow was passed in for $550,000 as a yearling at the William Inglis Easter Sale. She is now owned by Kate Nivison who is a very good breeder. This is her first foal.
The 3rd dam is the Champion mare Virage De Fortune who was the Top Filly on the 2005-06 Australasian 3YO Classification. She had six to race for as many winners including the stakes horse Subedar. Virage De Fortune was by Champion Sire Anabaa (USA). Virage De Fortune was purchased by Darley in 2007 for $3,400,000.
The 4th dam is the Kenmare (fr) mare Virage. Kenmare was an outstanding broodmare sire in his own right. As well as throwing Virage de Fortune she had Group 3 winner Avenue which was also Group 1 Placed in the VRC Oakleigh Plate.
The 5th dam is the great Emancipation. She was a super star winning 19 races and was as good a mare as has ever raced in Australia.
This family has given us some outstanding horses including Stratum Star, Prague, Railings, Royal Pardon, Amovatio, Badawaia and the list goes on and on.
The daughters of Medaglia d’Oro have thrown 143 stakes horses including five Group 1 winners. The best to race here have been the Group winners Character, Paradee and Alegron with the Stakes winners Bacchanalia and Aquataine out of Exceed And excel mares which is a good indicator.
Most of Medaglia d’Oro’s daughters are in the USA. In total his daughter’s progeny have won in excess of AUS $115,000,000.
While these figures paint a great picture the most important part of the equation is the colt himself. He is a nice horse that gets around very well. I was thrilled to get him for a reasonable price and look forward to his racing career. He goes to Patrick Payne to train.
Patrick does a great job for us. I have syndicated 13 colts to have raced with Patrick with 10 winning. The three non-winners are still in our team with Capistan and Paululu having been placed and Another Nephew only starting once.
The best boys to have been trained for us by Patrick are Husson Eagle, the Nephew, The Cunning Fox, Japery and Invincible Al. To have three stake’s performers from 10 winners is a remarkable feat considering the average purchase price of the winners was just $57,400.
I hope you join us to race this colt, he is a ripper.
