A switch to Melbourne racing worked with instant effect on Fortunefivehundred and trainer Anthony Cummings sees no reason why the four-year-old can't make it successive wins at Caulfield.
As strange as it may seem for a horse with a single win from 12 starts against his name, Cummings says Fortunefivehundred has always had more potential than his record suggests.
"He's suffered a bit through stop-start preparations because he's been a bit immature," Cummings said.
But one of racing's most drastic and last-resort actions has also played a role.
"He needed gelding to turn his focus towards racing," Cummings said.
Fortunefivehundred posted his maiden win with a comprehensive Moonee Valley victory under lights and he is one of the early favourites to go back-to-back in the Craig's Royal Hotel Plate (2000m) at Caulfield on Wednesday.
He put more than four lengths on the second placegetter at Moonee Valley but the size of the win didn't surprise Cummings.
"Going back through his form as a three-year-old it wasn't too bad," Cummings said.
"He ran second to Scream Machine one day at Rosehill and he ran fifth to Fat Al in the Frank Packer Plate.
"That sort of form would take you a fair way in a Maiden race."
Cummings is hoping Fortunefivehundred can build a streak - albeit in lesser company - similar to his Victoria Derby-winning stablemate Fiveandahalfstar.
It took Fiveandahalfstar 13 trips to the races before his first win.
But when he did, Fiveandahalfstar liked winning so much that he won again at Rosehill and then claimed the Victoria Derby a week later.
Glen Boss, who brought Fortunefivehundred from the back of the field in his Moonee Valley win, retains the mount at Caulfield.
