Waller sets sights on Melbourne Cup

The most important thing trainer Chris Waller learned from this year's Melbourne Cup is that he really wants to win it.

The performance of fourth-placed Kelinni ignited the fire for Waller who until then had been a minor player with less competitive runners.

Whether it be Gatewood, who arrives at Waller's stable this week, Kelinni or another runner, Waller is determined he will be at Flemington in November with a leading chance.

"I've been bitten by the Melbourne Cup bug," Waller said.

"I want to win it. We came close with Kelinni and he was the most realistic chance we have had so far."

A Listed winner in England, Gatewood had three starts in the Melbourne spring in the care of leading British trainer John Gosden.

His Geelong Cup win was not enough to earn him a high enough penalty to get into the Melbourne Cup and his last hope to make the race was dashed when he finished behind Kelinni in the qualifying Lexus Stakes.

Bought by OTI Racing to do his future racing in Australia, Gatewood will be assessed by Waller over the next few weeks.

"He will arrive at the stable on Friday," Waller said.

"I'm not sure what we will set him for.

"I will rung John Gosden and learn what I can from him about the horse and then talk to the owners and work out a plan.

"He looks like a straightforward horse with a turn of foot.

"But perhaps over here he might be a weight-for-age horse and there are significant mile (1600m) and 2000 metre races in Australia.

"We have to respect the pool these horses come from."

Kelinni is in pre-training and will return to Waller in the new year with the trainer to also assess weight-for-age races for him.

"He will have a light autumn of probably three races with the BMW the aim," Waller said.

"Whether he will be well weighted in the Melbourne Cup next time around is something we need to consider."

Also arriving in January will be nine horses Waller bought at the Tattersall's October sale in England to swell the numbers of imports already in the stable.

The Melbourne Cup winner may be among them.
