Frill Seeking a surprise Millions hope

Tuesday 18 December 2012, 4:48pm

A filly bought with a view to the traditional three-year-old races is on her way to a tilt at one of the world's richest juvenile features.

Frill Seeking lines up at Wyong on Thursday to try to confirm a place in the field for the $2 million Magic Millions on January 12 at the Gold Coast.

The $200,000 race at Wyong has cemented itself as an important lead-up to the main event, helped by the 2010 win of Karuta Queen who went on to claim the big prize.

Trainer Matthew Smith had a taste of what could be when Combat Kitty ran second to Karuta Queen at the Gold Coast but admitted Frill Seeking had surprised him with the way she has stood up to her early training.

"I don't think she's really a two-year-old and everything she is doing she is doing herself," Smith said.

"She hasn't had a thing go wrong and is doing things on her own ability.

"She should have won the other day. She's got plenty of ability. She's fit and well so we'll have a go."

One of the first crop by 2008 Golden Slipper winner Sebring, Frill Seeking is out of Vietnam, runner-up in the 2006 Queensland Oaks.

She made her debut at Warwick Farm, her home track, on December 5, running third after finding herself in a traffic jam until the last 150 metres.

Frill Seeking powered home to finish less than a length from the winner Madame Fly.

Jason Collett will ride Frill Seeking who drew barrier 10 of 13 at Wyong with favourite Certitude to start from three.

The Gai Waterhouse-trained Certitude was at $3 in TAB's opening market ahead of Melbourne filly Calcatta at $6.

Combat Kitty, meanwhile, has given Smith a few anxious moments but he hopes to have her back racing in the autumn.

She won a Listed race at Flemington in November 2011 but has had just three starts since, her most recent when seventh in The Nivison at Randwick in October.

"She was sore after Randwick," Smith said.

"There is another good race in her but she is a bit fragile.

"The owners decided to wait another year to send her to stud. The ability is there and if we get her back I know she can do well."
