Moreira back chasing Newmarket win

Friday 13 March 2015, 2:13pm

Superstar jockey Joao Moreira needed little convincing to make the trip to Flemington to ride Brazen Beau against the world's best sprinters in the Newmarket Handicap.

The tearaway leader in the Hong Kong jockeys' premiership is unbeaten in two rides on the Chris Waller-trained colt, highlighted by the Group One Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemington last spring.

"I have a very good memory of the last times I've been to Australia and hopefully I can keep on having those good memories," Moreira said.

"This horse has won a Group One race with me last year and the connections are very nice people to ride for.

"They invited me down and I was always going to go if I could."

Moreira has not spoken to Waller about Brazen Beau but liked what he saw in his first-up second to Lankan Rupee in the Lightning Stakes on February 21.

He said while Lankan Rupee was impressive he was sure Brazen Beau had the improvement to make a race of it, especially with 6.5kg less.

"It is a very strong race," Moreira said.

"The horse that beat him last time is in the race but if he brings the form from the Coolmore Stud Stakes with him I think he has got a winning chance."

With Moreira flying in from Hong Kong, Singapore based Craig Newitt will also jet in for his ride on Lankan Rupee in what could be another international finish to a Group One race in Melbourne.

Hong Kong-based Brett Prebble and Douglas Whyte provided the quinella with Wandjina and Alpine Eagle in the Australian Guineas last week.

A nine time winner aboard Lankan Rupee, Newitt has been in constant contact with Dale Smith, the gelding's regular trackwork partner since his departure for Singapore and has received glowing reports.

Lankan Rupee carries topweight of 58.5kg, conceding Terravista 2kg and Chautauqua 3kg after being beaten into third place by that pair in the Darley Classic at level weights.

"It's not ideal but you win five Group Ones you're entitled to give away a bit of weight," Newitt said.

"I probably thought they might have got a bit further away on him in the weights but I'm happy with how they've come out."

Lankan Rupee now shares favouritism with Hawkes Racing-trained Chautauaqua at $3 with Brazen Beau next in line at $5.

Terravista, ranked the equal highest sprinter in the world with Lankan Rupee in 2014, arrived in Melbourne early on Friday.

He is aiming to become the first horse since Polycrates in 1917 to win the Newmarket first-up and is a $5.50 chance.
