The jockey who rode Laser Hawk to his debut win predicts the comeback galloper can be an autumn carnival force again after a pleasing barrier trial on Friday.

Rosehill Guineas winner Laser Hawk, making his first public appearance since his third in last year's Australian Derby, finished second to stablemate Betrayal in a 1050m trial at Randwick.

After the Derby last April the Gai Waterhouse-trained gelding had a bone chip removed from his knee and had six months in the paddock to recover.

Laser Hawk was ridden in Friday's trial by Neil Paine who also rides the four-year-old in trackwork and was aboard for his debut win at Newcastle in 2011.

"I can't believe how a horse that has had a problem with his leg has come back so well," Paine said.

"His stride is perfect and there's everything to like about him.

"He'll be a force in whatever he runs in."

Races such as the Ranvet Stakes and the BMW are expected to be among Laser Hawk's autumn carnival targets.

Waterhouse had 10 trial winners at the Randwick session including Breeders Plate winner Whittington and promising three-year-old filly Urban Groove.
