Carnival plans on hold for Miss Cover Girl

Saturday 3 October 2015, 3:57pm

An interstate campaign for Miss Cover Girl is in the balance after her lacklustre return to racing at Doomben on Saturday.

Miss Cover Girl ($3) was a notable drifter in betting before finishing third, beaten 5-1/4 lengths, in the Coke Zero Handicap won by Architect who was heavily backed to start the $2.70 favourite.

Trainer Kelly Schweida will reconsider plans to start Miss Cover Girl in the Group Three The Nivison (1200m) at Randwick on October 17.

"I thought she was pretty disappointing considering she had the winner inside her at the 600 metres," Schweida said.

"Maybe the 1050 metres might be a bit sharp for her now."

Jockey Glen Colless was equally perplexed by Miss Cover Girl's defeat.

"I had to come a bit wide on the home turn but I thought she would've finished the race off a bit better than she did," Colless said.

Trainer Desleigh Forster is still keen to target the Group One Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) with I'm Belucci which finished third in the Canadian Club Handicap (1600m).

"He just has a bit of trouble getting around Doomben because he's such a long strider," Forster said.

"I'm sure he's looking for a big, open track like Randwick."

The Spring Champion is also on the agenda for I'm Belucci's stablemate Too Good To Refuse who impressed in an exhibition gallop at Doomben on Saturday.

The son of Rothesay earned a trip south following his dominant victory at Doomben on September 19.

Cylinder Beach, who galloped with Too Good To Refuse, will be nominated for a three-year-old benchmark race at Randwick.
