Cox Plate would add to the CV of Winx

Monday 5 October 2015, 12:54pm

The Cox Plate is firming as the next start for brilliant race mare Winx.

The Chris Waller-trained four-year-old added Saturday's Epsom Handicap at Randwick to her Queensland Oaks win in May.

Winx will have her next start in another Group One race, either the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley on October 24 or a week later in the Myer Classic at Flemington.

For Waller a win in the Cox Plate would certainly look a lot better on her record.

"The Myer doesn't make a lot of difference to her resume but the Cox Plate does," Waller said.

"She's the winner of two Group One races, an Epsom and a Queensland Oaks.

"Sure a Myer would look good but a Cox Plate would look better."

Waller said he would prepare the daughter of Street Cry to run in the Cox Plate with the Myer Classic a reserve option.

He said Winx will go for a break after running in either race.

"I only wanted to give her three runs (this campaign) and that won't change," Waller said.

"It will be the Cox Plate or the Myer.

"We will prepare her for the Cox Plate and if it's not working out as we would expect then there is the Myer which was the original plan."

Waller said Winx appeared to have come through Saturday's incident-packed victory in The Epsom in good order.

Winx could be one of four runners from the Waller stable to run in the Cox Plate.

He already has Kermadec and Press Statement aimed at the 2040m race with Preferment now a likely contender after his victory in the Turnbull Stakes at Flemington on Sunday.

Kermadec heads the Cox Plate market at $4.60 ahead of Winx at $6.50 with Fawkner next best at $7.50.

Press Statement and Preferment are both $15 chances.
