Singapore's Emperor Max ready for Ascot

Tuesday 13 October 2015, 6:19am

Singapore sprinter Emperor Max has arrived in England to take part in the British Champions Sprint at Ascot.

The six-year-old will take his chance in Saturday's Group One contest alongside some of the best sprinters in Europe.

The son of Holy Roman Emperor heads to the 1200m-race on the back of a win in a Group Three event at Kranji last month.

"We are lucky to have a horse like him to travel and take in these experiences, even though it is nerve-racking," trainer Stephen Gray said.

"The owners (Gordon and Ernest Yau) have been kind enough and brave enough to have a crack.

"To travel a horse from Singapore is a big thing as not many people do it as the prize money is so good there.

Gray confirmed Singapore-based Australian Corey Brown would take the ride.

"Corey Brown will ride him he does well on the horse and deserves his chance," Gray said.

"He is a world-class jockey. Having him on board is as important as he knows the horse and is part of the team."

Although having plenty of faith in Emperor Max who has finished second in the Group One KrisFlyer Sprint at Kranji for the past two seasons, Gray feels the straight track at Ascot could work against him.

"It is a different track and way of racing," he said.

"The biggest negative is running in that straight line, but he has got the temperament to cope with it and he will like the cut in the ground.

"If he does well I would like to bring him back for Royal Ascot next year."
