Vastly improved mare Hidden Pearl showed she won't be out of place during the Melbourne spring when she smashed the Doomben 1050m course record on Saturday.
Hidden Pearl, the $1.80 favourite, lived up to a strong recent trial win when she beat seasoned sprinter Architect ($3.20) by 2-1/4 lengths in the Gorman Removals Handicap.
She clocked 59.19secs and ran an exceptional 32.68secs for her final 600m in taking 0.31secs off the record.
Trainer Barry Lockwood confirmed Hidden Pearl would head to Flemington on November 5 where she will contest a Group Three race.
"She has to take a step up for Melbourne but today was good. She surprised me a bit today because I felt she might knock up a bit in the final 200 metres but she didn't," Lockwood said.
Hidden Pearl failed to win at her first four starts when trained in the NSW northern rivers but since joining Lockwood she has won five races and been placed three times in eight starts.
Meanwhile, apprentice James Orman had to scrap pre-race plans before winning on Casarati ($5) in the Rainbow Beach Hotel Handicap (1640m).
Stable representative for trainer Bruce Hill, Rebecca Hammersley, said it had been the plan to lead on Casarati but Brooke Stower on My Quilter ($7.50) had ruined that by opening a big advantage.
Casarati grabbed My Quilter in the shadows of the post to win by a head.
"Casarati deserved the win because he has been very consistent with no luck lately," Hammersley said.
She said Hill, who was in Sydney to saddle the unplaced Teronado, would look for more open company 1600m races for Casarati.
Orman, who rode his 24th winner for the season, said he always felt he would win but My Quilter had fought back.
Runaway premiership leader trainer Tony Gollan had his fifth winner for the week when Dee Nine Elle ($3.50) led all the way.
"Tony has a big opinion of her and she could win a better race," stable foreman John Fleming said.
