La Passe earns a shot at G1 Myer Classic

Saturday 17 October 2015, 5:37pm

Vastly improved mare La Passe will be given her chance at the highest level after landing her second successive stakes win.

Now a winner of six of her 13 starts, La Passe will head to the Group One Myer Classic at Flemington.

After winning the Blazer Stakes at Flemington on October 4, La Passe added the Tristarc Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday when she wore blinkers for the first time.

Ridden by Michelle Payne, La Passe ($21) finished strongly to score a short-neck win over Solicit ($11) with Jessy Belle ($11) three quarters of a length away third.

"It's pretty hard to get horses in that sort of form and with a Group One in a couple of weeks I'm pretty sure she'll be going there," trainer Darren Weir said.

Weir, who landed his third winner for the day with La Passe, said Payne convinced him to apply blinkers to her raceday gear.

He said while the mare didn't work that well in the headgear during the week he noted La Passe saves her best for raceday.

Payne said the application of blinkers had enabled the mare to take some tight runs.

"She's a beautiful mare that makes your job so easy," Payne said.
