Queensland trainer outed for nine months

Tuesday 20 October 2015, 6:22am

Magic Millions winning trainer Darryl Hansen will appeal a nine month-disqualification for a high TCO2 reading in one of his horses.

Last week Hansen was found guilty of presenting a horse to race with a carbon dioxide (TCO2) level above the allowable level.

After considering submissions on penalty, stewards delivered their decision on Monday night.

The inquiry was told two samples were taken from the Hansen-trained How Can I Help who finished fifth at Ipswich on August 14.

The first showed a TCO2 level of 37.4 millimoles per litre in plasma which was above the threshold of 36 but the second was 36.5, within the legal range allowing for a 1.0 measure of uncertainty.

Hansen denied he had done anything illegal and said the high level could have been the result of a stable employee mistakenly administered a substance containing bicarbonate to the horse's feed.

Chief steward Allan Reardon said Hansen had a week to relocate is horses with the ban scheduled to begin on October 26.

Hansen's lawyer Matt Tutt said Hansen would appeal and apply for a stay of proceedings.

"My client pleaded not guilty and is determined to fight the charges all the way," Tutt said.

Hansen won the Magic Millions 2YO Classic with Le Chef in January and was awarded the prestigious Wayne Wilson Medal for outstanding performance by a trainer.
