Goldman and Hellbent in Group One debut

Two years ago Kurt Goldman set himself two goals.

One has already been ticked off within the young trainer's designated timeframe.

And he gets his first chance at achieving the other much sooner than he anticipated when he saddles up his first Group One runner on one of Australian racing's biggest stages at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day.

Regardless of talented colt Hellbent's result in the Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) on Saturday, it will be an invaluable experience.

"Obviously these are the grand finals. This is what you strive for. This is what you dream of," Goldman said of having a Group One runner on Derby Day.

"This is why you get up at four o'clock every morning and hopefully you get the rewards at the end of it.

"I'm a young bloke. I set myself a goal two years ago that by the time I was 30 I wanted to train a stakes winner and by the time I was 40 I wanted to train a Group One winner.

"I'm 29. I trained a Group Three winner six months ago and now I've got a runner in a Group One."

Goldman is the private trainer for Alan Cardy and prepares his horses on the former Wallaby winger's private track at Goulburn on the NSW Southern Tablelands.

The trainer believes the lightly raced Hellbent warrants his place in the Coolmore.

But he is realistic about his chances against Godolphin colt Exosphere, the $1.40 favourite.

"You've got to be realistic and I don't think we can beat him," Goldman said.

"But you've got to be in it and we're here and the horse is well. So we'll give it a shot."

Hellbent is a $16 chance for what will be his fourth start.
