WHAT WAS SAID ABOUT THE MELBOURNE CUP

"I can't say how grateful I am (to the people who helped me), and I want to say to everyone else, get stuffed, because women can do anything and we can beat the world." - Michelle Payne, the first female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup.

"To think that Darren Weir has given me a go and it's such a chauvinistic sport, I know some of the owners were keen to kick me off, and (part-owner) John Richards and Darren (Weir) stuck strongly with me." - Payne again after her win on Prince of Penzance.

"I keep saying to the owners it's hard enough to get into the race let alone to win it. Just enjoy the day and hope like hell we can run top ten." - Prince of Penzance trainer Darren Wier.

"This was a fairytale right from the start. He wasn't given a chance, 100-1 and he's come out on top. What a story, fantastic." - Prince of Penzance part-owner Mark Hall.

"I was riding hard myself and then I looked up and saw her in front and I couldn't believe it." - Jockey Kerrin McEvoy on seventh-placed Excess Knowledge in reference to his sister-in-law Payne.

"It's a great win for the horse, but it's fantastic for a woman jockey to win at the Melbourne Cup for the first time." - Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

"Michelle Payne rides into history & becomes the 1st woman jockey to win the Melbourne Cup. Great going Michelle!-JG?" - Former PM Julia Gillard.

"He's eating grass. He looks happy, He has fluids. It's a bad injury, but it should be repairable." - English trainer Ed Dunlop on 10-year-old Red Cadeaux's status after he failed to finish his fifth Melbourne Cup, a raced he finished second in three times.

"All I needed was an out and I thought I could win. I just had to wait for the last furlong and the otherS flashed by. I would've been in it had I got out at the top of the straight." - Jockey Michael Walker on third-placed Criterion.

"The pace was just too slack for him." - Jockey Zac Purton on the favourite Fame Game, who finished 13th.
