Power Trip wins Maribyrnong Plate on debut

Saturday 7 November 2015, 1:41pm

Having knocked back a significant offer for two-year-old Power Trip this week, the owners of the gelding have celebrated a Group win during the Melbourne Cup carnival at Flemington.

The John McArdle-trained juvenile Power Trip, a $42,000 yearling, made his debut in Saturday's $150,000 Group Three Maribyrnong Plate (1000m) and went a long way to justifying the faith of his connections in his all-the-way win.

"The offers started at two hundred (thousand) and on Monday we were at a luncheon with his owners and we got offered four hundred thousand which I thought was enough," McArdle said.

"But Barry Mcilwaine, who is the main owner, and his wife have put a lot into racing and they said `we want to race him on Saturday'. And hopefully that's been vindicated now.

"This is their first stakes winner."

McArdle says the plan will be to give Power Trip a spell and look to give him his chance at measuring up to feature juvenile races in the autumn.

Power Trip ($9) was one of three horses to come to the grandstand side in the straight track sprint while four horses went towards the rail.

Although the intention was to try to take a sit, jockey Craig Williams said Power Trip began so well and was too brilliant for his rivals.

He kicked clear of the outside division and had enough in the tank to hold off Flying Artie ($6.50) who finished strongly on the rail side.

The margin was a short-half head, with Gloriette ($6), also on the rail side, another length away.
