The racing industry has been looking for ways to embrace its next generation, and a core group of young enthusiasts are leading the way.
Established last September, the Young Professionals in Racing (YPR) group has enjoyed a rapid rise as it seeks to bring young people closer to the sport of kings.
"For young people in the country a day at the races is a social event while in the city it's harder to get a group of people together," YPR founding chair Kathryn Thomson told AAP.
"We've had exceptional support from organisations such as Racing NSW and the Australian Turf Club, and the founding of our group is aptly timed with exciting developments in the racing industry."
The group aims to bring like-minded people together and give them an opportunity to network and get a behind-the- scenes look at various aspects of the industry.
Thomson said a punters workshop held last year was extremely popular while a trip to the Inglis Classic Yearling sale in Sydney on the weekend was also well received by members.
"There's an issue of young people engaging with the industry and they don't have an understanding of how easy it is to become involved," she said.
"It was a unique experience to get an insight into how sales work, and some of our members said they might like to buy into a horse one day."
A key aim for YPR is for young people to embrace the spirit of racing, and to make city meetings the social occasions so enjoyed in country areas.
"There's a lot of exciting events planned over the autumn carnival," Thomson said.
"We're going to go to a track session, have a day at the races and maybe even have a fashion workshop.
"So far our organic growth has been achieved by word of mouth ... I don't want to give too much away but we have big plans for the next five years."
