Keen to capitalise on a lack of numbers, trainer David Jolly will almost certainly run South Australian mare Avoid Lightning at Caulfield on Saturday.

Jolly has also entered the stakes-winning sprinter for a race in Adelaide but with only seven acceptors for the Listed WJ Adams Stakes (1000m) in Melbourne, she is expected to make the interstate trip.

"The last couple of sprints there (in Melbourne) have been smallish fields and to be honest, I would have expected them to be a bit stronger with a bit more depth," Jolly said.

"This one fits in nicely for her and depending on how she goes she could then bounce into something even better."

Avoid Lightning is on the second line of betting for the Caulfield feature, opening at $3.70 with TAB fixed odds before quickly firming into $3.

In-form sprinter First Command is favourite at $2.30.

Jolly said the race was a "crossroads" for Avoid Lightning who holds a nomination for the Group One Newmarket Handicap.

"This might tell us a bit about where to go with her," Jolly said.

"She could possibly go to one or two of the major sprints, or go back to mares grade.

"We could also freshen her up and wait for our carnival (in Adelaide)."

A winner of five of her eight starts including the Listed Lightning Stakes in Adelaide last year, Avoid Lightning will be partnered by top jockey Craig Williams who replaces apprentice Adam McCabe.

The mare's only previous appearance at Caulfield was a fourth in the Group Three Cockram Stakes last spring.

She resumed with a second in a fillies and mares handicap at Moonee Valley on December 29 when she didn't have the best of luck.

The WJ Adams Stakes is one of four Listed races on Saturday's Caulfield program.

Quality three-year-old Albrecht is favourite to return a winner in the Manfred Stakes (1200m) while two-year-old stablemate Metastasio is top pick for the Chairman's Stakes (1100m).

Both Darley gallopers will be ridden by Kerrin McEvoy whose wife Cathy gave birth to their third child, a boy, on Wednesday.

Albrecht will have seven rivals in his first race on the path to the Group One Australian Guineas.

They will include the Greg Eurell-trained Hosting and Peter Moody-prepared Royal Haunt.

Moody's champion mare Black Caviar is scheduled to have an exhibition gallop at Saturday's meeting.
