Iggi Pop hot to trot for racing comeback

Thursday 17 March 2016, 11:40am

Hours of work in a trotting sulky have toughened Iggi Pop for his returning to racing from a major injury.

Iggi Pop, who is raced by the Segenhoe Stud, won the 2014 Queensland Cup and then ran well during the Sydney spring carnival that year.

He hasn't raced since finishing ninth in the Group One Metropolitan at Randwick in October, 2014.

Iggi Pop, who was with John Sargent for his Cup win, is now trained by Peter Robl who explained the gelding had bowed a tendon and retirement had been considered.

"However, eventually he was sent to Peter Morris, a trotting trainer at Menangle, who had him in work in a gig for three months."

"Iggi Pop then went to the beach on a regular basis and was able to be put back into training," Robl said.

He said Iggi Pop had done plenty of work to be ready for his comeback in the Titan Sheds Handicap at Doomben on Saturday.

"It has been a long road back and we are looking to the future. He is a Queensland Cup winner at 3200m and those are the type of races we are looking at long term," Robl said.

"There is nothing for him in the Sydney autumn but he deserves a chance at more stakes race," Robl added.

In-form jockey Brad Pengelly has the ride on Iggi Pop who has 59kg.

Sunshine Coast-based apprentice Sarah Eilbeck will have her first ride for top trainer Tony Gollan when she takes the mount on High Esteem.

"I want someone who can get High Esteem to roll along and Sarah has been doing that on horses of late," Gollan said.

Gollan also has the consistent Heart Of A Warrior making his open company debut in the race.
