Sires' wins out over Randwick for Barbass

Tuesday 24 May 2016, 5:07pm

Randwick entry Barbass is almost certain to give Sydney a miss to make an unlikely Brisbane winter carnival appearance.

Bowing to the wishes of Barbass' enthusiastic ownership group, bush trainer Cameron Crockett admits Barbass is odds-on to run in the Group Two BRC Sires' Produce Stakes rather than a 1400m race at Randwick on Saturday.

A winner of the Inglis Challenge during the Scone Cup carnival, Barbass is the 57.5kg topweight at Randwick.

"He's nominated for Randwick but I think he will be headed up north," Crockett said.

"It could be a touch ambitious for mine, but at this stage the owners are pretty keen."

Crockett said Barbass appealed as a horse which would be better served next season but he couldn't tell how far the youngster would go.

"He's probably the best horse I've had in my care but I've never had a Group horse so I don't know what level he can get to," Crockett said.

"He may step up to it, he may not. I'm not sure.

"Yes, he was impressive at Scone but what you've got to remember it is restricted company. It was for horses only bought from the Scone yearling sale."

Last-start Lord Mayors Cup winner Ecuador heads the weights for the WJ McKell Cup with Opinion on 59.5kg.

Ecuador is up 2kg on his Rosehill win over Lady Le Fay and McKell rival Havana Cooler.

Opinion is one of seven entries for Chris Waller in a race that the leading trainer is yet to win despite his dominance of Sydney staying events.

Raw Impulse will have the 54kg limit as the in-form Victorian-trained stayer tries to maintain an unbeaten Australian record.

The import has won his three Australians starts for trainer Darren Weir, the latest by almost three lengths over 2000m at Caulfield.
