Last Typhoon heading to Qld for Grand Prix

Tuesday 24 May 2016, 5:18pm

Well-bred Last Typhoon will head to Brisbane for the Grand Prix Stakes ahead of a planned Queensland Derby mission.

Trainer Robert Smerdon said the colt was due to fly to Queensland on Tuesday night to run in Saturday's Grand Prix (2200m) at Doomben, a traditional Derby lead-up.

Last Typhoon is by Street Cry and is the only foal out of former Australian Horse of the Year Typhoon Tracy who died after giving birth to the colt in 2012.

A winner at Bairnsdale and Donald over 2000m when trained by Peter Moody, Last Typhoon has been unplaced in his three starts for Smerdon but has done enough for connections to press on to Queensland with a view to the Grand Prix Stakes and Queensland Derby.

"I think he's going to run the trip and that's a good starting point," Smerdon said.

"So we're certainly keen to give him his chance."

Last Typhoon finished 11th behind Queensland Oaks hopeful Tavi Bay over 2000m at Caulfield last start and Smerdon said the colt would have a gear change for Saturday.

The trainer will remove blinkers and put winkers on the three-year-old.

"He was quite good late in the race, through the line and past the line," Smerdon said of the last-start run.

"The barrier forced us to go back a bit and Jake (Noonan) said he pulled a bit with the blinkers on. So we're going to take them off and just leave him with winkers."

Smerdon believes Eagle Farm, the venue for the Derby, will suit Last Typhoon better than Doomben.
