Bryan Guy believes he has an advantage over rival trainers as he prepares three-year-old Eagle Way for the Queensland Derby.

Eagle Way will have his final lead-up to Derby in the Group Two Grand Prix Stakes at Doomben on Saturday.

The gelding has taken a traditional path to the race, having had a barrier trial and three starts going into Saturday's dress rehearsal.

"I know there are some good horses from the south such as South Australian Derby winner Howard Be Thy Name and boom horse Mackintosh," Guy said.

"I am not underestimating them but they have had to take a harder path to get here.

"I have been lucky. Eagle Way is owned by top Hong Kong trainer John Moore who has left him here especially to win a Derby.

"He has let me take him along in a way to build up to the Derby."

Guy said Eagle Way had shown he was on course for the big race with his last-start fourth in the Rough Habit Plate.

"He should have run third and maybe even second. But I liked the way he picked up in the straight. The run had genuine stayer written all over it," Guy said.

"The other thing is he will be much better at Eagle Farm. Eagle Way has twice been on a big track at the Sunshine Coast and romped home."

Meanwhile, trainer David Vandyke has booked top Hong Kong jockey Zac Purton for Brazen who ran third in the Rough Habit Plate.
