Benchi Pegasus ready to begin winter prep

Thursday 26 May 2016, 1:21pm

Greg Eurell has targeted winter racing with Benchi Pegasus because of his liking for rain-affected ground.

Benchi Pegasus is likely to get those conditions when he makes his return in Saturday's George Malone Memorial Plate at Sandown.

Eurell accepted with Benchi Pegasus in last Saturday's Listed Straight Six at Flemington but the trainer scratched him to wait for more suitable options.

"He's in very good order and we've just been waiting for the tracks to get the sting out of them," Eurell said.

"He's very good in the wet. That was the main objective in giving him a big spell and coming back for these winter races."

Three of Benchi Pegasus's five wins have been on soft or heavy going and he has only finished worse than second once in five heavy-track starts.

He resumes for the first time since a midfield finish on a good track at Sandown at the end of December.
